can t joke with dexy is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. it grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before faith is a more breezy, airy house groove. the drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. like its title suggest, ghosts is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. lastly, scale is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an ep that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.

a defining moment in dance music history was the day that roy davis jr. teamed with vocalist and writer peven everett in 1997 to create this deep, ethereal, soul-music gem that helped launch an entire musical movement known affectionately as speed garage. the live garage mix is the most popular but the other mixes have grown in popularity over time. it is hard to believe that this record is almost 20 years old yet it still sounds as fresh today as it did so long ago. truly a classic that deserves to be celebrated by a new generation of dance music lovers. gabriel play!

last spotted together on the cut some three years ago with their eponymous debut lp, the crew like kaidi tatham, akwasi mensah, matt lord, and dego ‘ranks’ mcfarlane reunite for this fresh 2000black 12&#8243,,,,,. off the christmas card list is apparently a precursor to a second album from the quartet and it’s the last 12&#8243,,,,, in a fine year for 2000black that saw the killer dego lp as the centrepiece. the a-side is dedicated to the title cut, an endlessly slinky boogie number that really showcases the collective musicality of this crew, whilst the b-side is split between “hurry whilst they are away” and “fila high”. the former is bugged out beat down west london-style, and the latter a killer latin-flecked cut.

after the alma ep’ by shanti celeste, secretsundaze’ s 19th release comes from another uk home grown favorite wbeeza. beeza is a firm part of the secretsundaze family and although it’s his first release on the label, he has been a regular fixture at the parties now for 5 or 6 years playing at both the london events and touring internationally with giles and james as a live act, as well touring extensively by himself. we hope his music needs no introduction - his sound is quite simply fresh, an amalgamation of so many things from house, techno, jazz, hip hop to more uk leaning garage vibes.
